Freshwater Science: A HABs Primer
Ahead of NOAA’s annual Lake Erie HABs Forecast on June 27, catch up on the background and future of Lake Erie’s HABs with Ohio Sea Grant’s Dr. Chris Winslow. This primer included up-to-date information on topics such as nutrient sources in the Maumee River watershed that drive blooms, the progress toward meeting nutrient load reduction goals, and best practices for farmers. Dr. Winslow also provided updates on the state’s Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative research efforts, as well as the Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network’s wetland research projects for the H2Ohio initiative.

Microcystins are some of the most abundant and potent harmful algal bloom toxins and have emerged as a public health concern due to the potential to cause severe organ injury including liver damage. While currently there are no targeted therapies to protect against microcystin exposure, previous research found that naturally occurring bacteria from Lake Erie had the ability to degrade algal tox...

Freshwater Science: New Drainage Approaches for Nutrient and Sediment Removal
Переглядів 1443 місяці тому
Most agricultural land in the western basin of Lake Erie relies on drainage practices such as tile drainage and channelization to successfully grow crops on fertile yet poorly drained soils. However, water discharge from drainage can hinder surface water quality far beyond farm fields, with nutrient runoff fueling harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. Recent research has demonstrated that agricult...

Awesome video, I've played with aquaponics about 10yrs ago and had great results back when I lived in Hawaii, but it was a very high maintenance system but non the less I was very proud of what I created! Now I live in Nevada. Unfortunately it would cost too much to heat the water in winter and chill the water in summer. so now I grow in my garage with a small DIY hydro system. I always a place in my heart for Aquaponics Aloha Dean

They should try Mississippi grass shrimp, they’re native to Ohio. If they can get the nauplii to live they will have a great trophic level benefit there. I do this with other animals and I’m trying to get those shrimp to work for me but I can’t get them past nauplii. There is a study “biological means of increasing productivity of ponds” very old, but the last chart on the report is fantastic. They did trophic level studies, very useful for bass pond and is applicable to this. Use complex structure, simple structure (jargon) for breeding and living space, and then as a hunting tool for higher trophic levels, respectively.

I presume this process can also be used to remove or reduce the microcystin concentration from the lake at the critical times. reducing the harm to wildlife etc. until we can figure out how to manage the source pollution of our lakes.

Lake Erie is far from "back". The farmers of the Black Swamp area have the richest, darkest soil in the USA, yet they overfertilize with both chemicals and with farm animal manure. EVERY year there is a huge algal bloom in the western basin from all the excess fertilization. No one challenges the AG lobby. An even bigger threat are the Chinese big head carp that have already been caught IN LAKE ERIE. It's only a short matter of time before that great sport industry is gone.
